Rasam - South Indian

Rasam is a South Indian spicy soup that can be served as an appetizer.This is also used as a favourite dish with Rice.Rasam contains many spices which are considered beneficial to health.

Ingredients

1)Red Gram (toovar/toor dal) -1 cup
2)Asafoetida(Kayam)-a pinch
3)Mustard Seeds-1 tsp
4)Red chilly-2
5)Salt as required
6)Rasam Powder-2 tsp
7)Vegetable Oil -4 tsp
8)Coriander leaves
9)Curry leaves
10)Tomato- 2 nos
11)Small Onions
12)Cumin seeds(Jeerakam)-1 tsp
13)Lemon juice - 1/2 tsp
14)Green chili-1 Nos
15)Tamarind water(Tamarind Soaked in water)

How to Prepare

1)Boil Dal in a pressure cooker till it is soft and keep it aside.
2)Add the chopped tomatoes, rasam powder,Tamarind water and salt to the boiled dal.
3)Heat Oil in a saucepan and add cumin seeds,Red chilly and mustard seeds.
4)When the mustard starts crackling,add small oninon,curry leaves,garlic and green chilly,saute for a while.
5)Add the above to the boiled Dal and boil it for some time
6)Garnish it with coriander leaves and curry leaves before removing from flame.
7)Add lemon juice and mix well

Rasam is ready to be served. Serve it hot.
